The New England Patriots saw another switch at quarterback as rookie Drake Maye left Sunday’s game against the New York Jets with a concussion. Maye suffered the head injury in the first quarter as he escaped the pocket and picked up yards for the first down.

As the rookie quarterback slid to get down, Maye took a hit to the back of the head by Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood. With Maye out for the rest of the game, veteran Jacoby Brissett immediately stepped back in under center and helped the Patriots snap their six-game losing streak with a three-point win.

After Sunday’s win, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about the helmet-to-helmet hit that caused Maye to leave the game. Mayo didn’t mince his words, calling out the refs.

According to Zack Cox of the Boston Herald, Mayo said he thought some of the calls today were “questionable.” The first-year head coach also mentioned that the rookie quarterback wanted to go back in the game, but he’s in the concussion protocol, per Mark Daniels of MassLive.com.

Looking at the replay of the hit on Maye, you can understand why Mayo wasn’t happy with some of the calls in the game. The rookie looked like he was giving himself up as he slid to get down.

When the defender sees that move happening, he should be able to pull back. But with it being a bang-bang play, the refs made a judgment call.

The Patriots will now wait to see how long it will take for Maye to clear the league’s concussion protocol. New England is set to go on the road and play the Tennessee Titans next week. If the rookie cannot play, it will be Brissett under center.
