Jerod Mayo Puts Pressure on Patriots' Front Office Right After Week 12 Blowout
By Jovan Alford
After playing competitive football over the last four weeks, the New England Patriots fell flat on their face on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots got beat on both sides of the ball, losing 34-15.
New England’s defense got shredded by Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, who threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns. As for the Pats’ offense, rookie quarterback Drake Maye was sacked four times behind a struggling line.
Lastly, the Patriots couldn’t get out of their way, racking up 10 penalties for 75 yards. For a team that showed signs of growth as of late, New England took a huge step back in Week 12, which isn’t a good look for first-year head coach Jerod Mayo.
Mayo appeared on Monday’s edition of The Greg Hill Show and asked if the first-year head coach would be coaching differently if he had the pieces to sub in for guys who are making mistakes, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Hill continued, is that a fair blanket statement without calling anyone out in particular? Mayo responded with, “That’s a fair assessment.”
Patriots fans weren’t happy with Mayo’s response, especially with some fans who thought he was deflecting while placing the blame on the roster. Other fans believed the first-year head coach wasn’t taking accountability.
However, while those fans may be correct, another way to look at this is Mayo putting pressure on the Patriots’ front office.
New England GM Eliot Wolf did not do his best to build this roster, especially since the Pats had a ton of cap space this offseason.
The offensive line has struggled this season, which showed up again in Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins.
The Pats’ defense has playmakers, but they aren’t creating much pressure or takeaways (9). The only things the Patriots got right were the selection of Drake Maye in the first round and the wide receiver room, but it’s been a mixed bag of results from that unit.
New England fans hope this team can rebound in Week 13 against the Indianapolis Colts, who are coming off a physical game against the Detroit Lions.
