June Will Be Red Sox Shortstop's Final Full Month in Boston

The veteran shortstop continues to struggle at the plate, and with top prospect Marcelo Mayer now in the majors, the Red Sox may be preparing for a change.

Trevor Story’s tenure with the Boston Red Sox may be coming to an end soon. Once viewed as the franchise's shortstop for years to come, the 31-year-old is in the midst of another disappointing season. With the big-league promotion of Marcelo Mayer, Boston’s infield future is beginning to take shape without Story.

Trevor Story's Time in Boston Will Come to an End Before Trade Deadline

Since joining the Red Sox on a six-year, $140M contract prior to the 2022 season, injuries and inconsistency have defined his tenure, and Story hasn’t played more than 94 games in any season. This year, Trevor is batting just .222 with a .269 on-base percentage and a .325 slugging percentage. He has also struck out 65 times in 203 at-bats, compared to just 45 hits.

These numbers are a far cry from his time with the Colorado Rockies, where he was one of the best shortstops in the league. During his six seasons in Colorado, Story averaged 26 home runs and 75 RBIs a season. In his four seasons in Boston, Trevor has only 27 home runs combined.

While Story’s performance at the plate is alarming, the Sox just called up top prospect Marcelo Mayer, who is currently starting at third base in the absence of Alex Bregman. Mayer will need at-bats, which will likely come at shortstop once Bregman returns from the IL.

That could spell the end for Story in Boston. If Mayer continues to show promise and the front office decides it’s time to fully embrace the youth movement, June may be Story’s final full month as a starter in a Red Sox uniform.
