Just-Released Patriots Bust Quickly Signs With Former Rival
The New England Patriots sit with a 3-8 record, and this season is all about rebuilding. Head coach Jerod Mayo and general manager Eliot Wolf are in Year 1 of the job.
They are seeking to change the identity around the team and decided to release second-round WR Tyquan Thornton on Saturday. While the Pats allowed him to carve out a role for himself, he dropped the ball. Even though things didn't work out in New England, Thornton quickly found a new home on Tuesday.
NFL News: Tyquan Thornton Joins the Kansas City Chiefs
According to Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are adding Thornton to their practice squad. The Baylor product was a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft but didn't do much during his tenure in New England. Over 28 career games with the Pats, the Florida native has finished with 39 catches for 385 yards and two touchdowns.
Mayo and Wolf didn't draft Thornton, so they didn't have the loyalty to him. It's all about the production that's put out on the field, and the Baylor product didn't do much with the Pats.
Despite that, the Kansas City Chiefs like something about his skillset. One trait that certainly caught their eye is his speed.
During the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, he ran a 4.28 40-yard dash. The Chiefs love speedy deep threats and Thornton fits the bill.
Kansas City has lost Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown for the season. That led to them acquiring DeAndre Hopkins via trade, and Thornton is the latest addition to the receiver room for the team.
