After signing a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the New England Patriots in the offseason, there were serious concerns about Stefon Diggs' ability to live up to that deal. He was coming off a torn ACL ahead of his age-32 season, and the Patriots' offense desperately needed him to turn back the clock. So far, not only has he been remarkably healthy, but he has exceeded expectations in Foxborough. Unfortunately, however, he is currently dealing with his first injury scare of the season, putting his status in jeopardy for Sunday.
Diggs popped up on the injury report earlier this week with a chest injury and has been a limited participant throughout the week. On the final injury report before Sunday, he was listed as questionable for the Titans game.
Yet, head coach Mike Vrabel doesn't sound particularly concerned. In his presser on Friday, he said he has full confidence in the rest of the WR room, adding "They've all shown that when given opportunities, they'll make plays. They all contribute... that room is understanding that the ball is going to go to the one that's open first in the progression," per Sports Illustrated's Mike Kadlick. One of the primary beneficiaries of this absence and this comment will be rookie receiver Kyle Williams.
Stefon Diggs' Potential Absence Opens the Door for Kyle Williams Breakout Game
Williams has been increasing his share of offensive snaps every week, but has yet to make an impact. He played a season-high 14 offensive snaps in Week 6 but failed to catch either of his targets. He currently has two catches for 20 yards for the season. For a third-round pick who was expected to make an immediate impact, that is not good enough.
At the same time, the former Washington State standout has been doing everything right, earning the praise of his coaches. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said this week that he has been happy with Williams' progression, and that the 22-year-old WR is working hard, understands his assignments, and does the right thing when the ball doesn't come to him.
If there was ever a time for the ball to come to him, it would be against the Titans on Sunday. Demario Douglas and Mack Hollins should benefit the most from Diggs' absence, but considering that the veteran receiver was getting more than six targets per game, there should be enough targets to go around for everyone. If Williams can't make the most of his increased opportunity, Efton Chism is waiting for his turn on the sidelines, ready to take advantage.
