The Boston Red Sox wrapped up their series against the Tampa Bay Rays with a bang on Wednesday night, notching a 4-3 victory over their AL East rival at Fenway Park. The Red Sox's bats were alive and well in their 34th win of the 2025 campaign, as each run scored came off a solo home run — including a pair from Marcelo Mayer.
A two-HR performance is always impressive; however, Mayer's duo of round-trippers happened to be his first and second at Fenway Park. The former 2021 fourth-overall pick first hit a 418-foot HR to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning before following it up with a 410-foot effort two frames later.
Red Sox 3B Marcelo Mayer Shows Fenway Park Love After 2-HR Game
Mayer had previously hit his first career HR against the New York Yankees on June 6, but that milestone came in enemy territory. After beating the Rays on Wednesday, the 22-year-old phenom couldn't hide how important it was to finally record a home run in front of the Red Sox faithful.
"It's always better to hit a home run at home compared to on the road. I much rather get cheered than booed," Mayer told reporters (h/t @NESN). "I love this place. I love the energy that Fenway Park brings. It's something I'll remember for the rest of my life."

Along with Kristian Campbell and Roman Anthony, Mayer is a key part of the Red Sox's 'Big 3' prospects. The trio was initially expected to be eased into the lineup, but plans quickly changed when Boston's season became rockier than expected, forcing the club to rely on its future in the present.
Fortunately, Mayer has proven why he deserved the top prospect label in the first place and has only improved with each passing game. Including Wednesday's dual-HR performance, the Chula Vista, CA native is now slashing .417/.462/1.250 with three HRs, a trio of RBIs, and a walk in his last six games (12 at-bats).
Is that performance sustainable? Probably not, but it shows that Mayer is ready to be an impact player much sooner than expected. Chances are he has more solo HRs in store for Fenway Park, whether they come as soon as this weekend's series against the Yankees or throughout his future seasons with the Red Sox.
Continuing his hot start is one way for Mayer to improve his odds of taking home individual hardware this winter. For now, the Red Sox third baseman is currently tied for the eighth-best 2025 American League Rookie of the Year odds (+5000) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
