The New England Patriots hired head coach Mike Vrabel this offseason as they looked to improve their team culture. Despite being the most successful NFL franchise of the last two decades, the Patriots were in dire need of a cultural reset following three consecutive years without a playoff appearance.
Fortunately, Vrabel comes to town with a reputation of knowing how to create a reliable locker room culture. Although it can take time for a new coach to make a noticeable impact, Thursday's press conference proved that the 49-year-old HC has already improved the Patriots' off-field vibes.
Patriots News: Mike Vrabel Emphasizing Family-First Mentality
During Thursday's event, Vrabel — along with owner Robert Kraft and EVP of player personnel Eliot Wolf — introduced some of the Patriots' free-agent signings to the media. Instead of being the usual transactionary introduction, ESPN's Mike Reiss reported that Vrabel & Co. made sure to put an emphasis on the players' families.
"It was more than a passing note that the festivities included not just the players themselves, but also parents, spouses and children," Reiss wrote. "Having them take part in the official signing of contracts, touring the team's facility and sitting in on the media news conference ties to the culture Vrabel is aiming to create."
Quick-hit thoughts/notes around the Patriots and NFL (more support needed for Drake Maye; a Jeffery Simmons-type role for Milton Williams; family theme on signing day tied to evolving culture under Mike Vrabel; LB Robert Spillane honors mom etc.) https://t.co/DRjjsgdqBi

Cornerback Carlton Davis III, offensive tackle Morgan Moses, defensive tackle Milton Williams, and linebacker Robert Spillane were all in attendance for the press conference. Instead of treating the signees as nothing more than employees, the Patriots HC emphasized the importance of taking care of the new additions' loved ones, too.
"We're excited to meet your support system and understand why you are the way you are," Vrabel said. "We're going to support the things and the people that are important in your life."
Vrabel even took the time to share a story about Spillane and how the latter's signing with the Tennessee Titans on Mother's Day 2018 profoundly impacted him. It was Vrabel's first offseason as the Titans HC, and seeing Spillane share the news with his mother is something the former hasn't forgotten.
In fact, Thursday's press conference actually took place on Spillane's mom's birthday.
Vrabel's family-first approach is a fairly big departure from the Bill Belichick and Jerod Mayo eras. Patriots fans are more than familiar with Belichick's stoic and business-like approach to coaching, which didn't necessarily leave room for him to get his players on a personal level.
Meanwhile, Mayo tried to treat the Patriots like a family, however, that doesn't mean he was as personable as Vrabel. The 39-year-old's run didn't feature anything close to Thursday's press conference, especially because Mayo was likely too busy dealing with the stress of being a first-time NFL head coach.
Hopefully, Vrabel's coaching approach fosters the change that the Patriots' locker room desperately needs. Teams can only succeed if players fully buy into their coach's vision, and it appears that the former New England linebacker-turned-coach is on the right path to accomplishing that goal.
