Mike Vrabel Poaches Browns Coach in Latest Hire for Patriots Staff
By Jovan Alford
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has been busy this week, making multiple hires for his coaching staff, including offensive (Josh McDaniels) and defensive coordinator (Terrell Williams).
Vrabel has a long road ahead of him, as he tries to get the Pats back on track after back-to-back four-win seasons. However, the fact that Vrabel has an offensive and defensive coordinator is a good start.
Josh McDaniels will be tasked with developing Drake Maye, who showed some flashes in his first year as a starting quarterback. However, the new quarterback coach will also have a hand in Maye's development.
In continuing his theme of hiring coaches he worked with over the years, Vrabel has reportedly brought over a coach from the Browns to join McDaniels on offense.
On Thursday night, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported that the Patriots are hiring Browns offensive assistant/quarterbacks Ashton Grant as their quarterbacks coach. Grant has been with the Browns for five years and reportedly interviewed for the Packers QBs coach vacancy.
Vrabel spent this season as a consultant in Cleveland, so it's no surprise he wanted Grant on his staff. Grant has spent the last two years as the offensive assistant/QBs for the Browns after serving as offensive quality coach in 2022.
The Manchester, Connecticut native joined the Browns in 2020 as a part of the Bill Walsh NFL diversity coaching fellowship and again the following season as a part of the Bill Wills coaching fellowship.
Grant played a notable role last season in the QB department with the Browns, working with Deshaun Watson and Joe Flacco. Flacco would have an outstanding run towards the end of last season and won the 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
The former Browns assistant will work with Maye and Joe Milton III, who also showed some flashes in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills. Grant will reportedly take over for T.C. McCartney, who was the QBs coach this season.
