Just a day after making the team’s initial 53-man roster, Kendrick Bourne was granted his release from the New England Patriots. While it wasn’t stunning to hear Bourne was released, it was shocking to hear that he wanted out of New England.
Bourne was a fan-favorite and a team-first player. He was a great veteran to the young receivers and one of the top two options in the majority of his four years with the team.
However, it was evident that Bourne’s tenure was in jeopardy. With the Patriots adding Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, and Kyle Williams in the offseason, it would’ve been difficult for him to get on the field.
Since he’s been released, multiple teams have ignored the Patriots’ warning that Bourne has regressed
49ers and Commanders Interested in Bourne
Bourne met with the 49ers on Monday and is set to meet with the Commanders on Tuesday. While both teams could use the eight-year veteran to bolster their depth, it’s evident that Bourne’s best days are behind him.

My understanding is that if a deal is not reached with San Francisco, Bourne’s also scheduled to visit the #Commanders tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/WGKDoL9UHe
Last year, Bourne was expected to come back and be one of the Patriots’ best receivers. But after suffering a torn ACL the year prior, Bourne had a drop off in production, posting 28 receptions, 305 receiving yards, and one touchdown in 12 games.
Bourne looked a step slower than his old self, as he was unable to create any explosive runs after the catch, and couldn’t create separation last year. Heading into this season, there was hope that Bourne would return to his old form since he didn’t have to rehab this offseason.
Unfortunately, it never happened, as Bourne had hardly any impact during training camp and spent some time sidelined due to injury. Ultimately, the Patriots, with Mike Vrabel now in charge, have leaned on Diggs, Williams, and Hollins to be their top receivers, along with Demario Douglas.
With Bourne unable to earn a spot on one of the league’s worst receiving rooms, it's obvious that Bourne isn’t an impactful player anymore. If the 49ers or Commanders sign him, they’ll find out quickly that Bourne has little gas left in the tank.
