Patriots' Competition to Hire Top Coaching Candidate Revealed on Tuesday
The New England Patriots finished the 2024 season with a 4-13 record. Despite leaking that Jerod Mayo would be returning in 2025, the Pats wasted no time in firing him following the Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills.
Shortly after the firing, players in the locker room didn't seem to be too upset at the move. With a new opening at HC, the early reports indicate that Mike Vrabel is the favorite to land the job.
Although it's early in the process, three other teams have expressed interest in Vrabel.
Patriots News: Three Other Teams Have Interest in Mike Vrabel
Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reported that the Chicago Bears will interview Vrabel on Wednesday. ESPN's Adam Schefter then said that Chicago, New York, and New Orleans all are going to be interested in adding Vrabel in addition to the Pats.
There were reports that Vrabel was eyeing the Pats job due to his connections with the organization. He played in New England from 2001-2008, securing three Super Bowl titles there. During his time with the Patriots, Vrabel had 606 total tackles and 48 sacks. He's also a member of the New England Patriots Hall of Fame.
While the Pats are likely the favorite, nothing is a lock. Vrabel already interviewed with the Jets at their facility last week and has the Bears next on the slate. New York has several young talented players like Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, and Breece Hall to name a few.
Meanwhile, the Bears have a young signal caller in Caleb Williams with solid difference makers like D.J. Moore and Jaylon Johnson, among others.
The Saints are probably last on the list due to their roster and salary cap situation.
Vrabel is going to take his time in this process but multiple teams are looking to attract the former Ohio State standout over to them. These interviews will take time but the Pats have competition for a guy high on their list.
