Patriots could be headed for a nightmare scenario with Christian Gonzalez

The Patriots' failure to extend Christian Gonzalez is becoming increasingly concerning, but the team cannot afford to lose him anytime soon.

So, the New England Patriots have yet to sign Christian Gonzalez to a contract extension for some reason (maybe the two sides are waiting on a possible Seattle Seahawks-Devon Witherspoon extension first?). And now, the Oregon alum missed his first practice on Tuesday and then posted a cryptic Instagram story with some lyrics from a Gunna song titled, "time reveals, be careful what you wish for."

"Should have been done by now," the lyrics read. "But you didn't know how to handle the feeling."

Maybe this is ultimately nothing, but fans have reasons to be at least a little concerned about all of this. Gonzalez has been a crucial part of New England's defense since the team drafted him in the first round in 2023, and without him, the team probably gets blown out against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX (no exaggeration, he may have single-handedly prevented a colossal loss due to a few clutch plays).

The Patriots can't mess around anymore. They need to do whatever they can to ensure Gonzalez sticks around for the long haul, because if he walks or requests a trade at any point, then they're going to be in some serious trouble.

The Patriots need Christian Gonzalez moving forward

Gonzalez isn't just New England's best defensive player (at just 24 years old, by the way); he has firmly established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in all of football.

The Patriots' entire secondary is built around him and his strengths, and he has proven time and time again that he can handle being the main focal point of an entire defense.

As things stand, New England is in a good spot to compete for a Super Bowl for the foreseeable future. People can say what they want about last season being a fluke, but the fact of the matter is that the Patriots are one of the best all-around teams, at least in the AFC, and given how young they are, too, last season was just the beginning of what's to come.

But none of that is going to matter if Gonzalez isn't around. The Patriots aren't going to find another cornerback with his talent, especially within the next few years, and they need to just hand him a blank check and do whatever it takes to keep him around.

New England has a good thing going right now, and there are reasons for fans to be excited about the team's outlook. But there is still one thing they need to cross off their to-do list, and that's to extend Gonzalez... immediately.
