The Patriots will face their ultimate test during the 2026 season

New England will look to prove last season's Super Bowl appearance wasn't a fluke as it prepares to take on some heavyweights in 2026.

The New England Patriots are back to being among the top teams in the AFC, and with those expectations, they are in for some serious battles in 2026. With an MVP candidate at quarterback, an elite defense, and a potential number one weapon in A.J. Brown if the trade goes through, the Patriots will have a serious target on their back.

They will also match up very well against some of the other heavyweights in the AFC. Obviously, some of the biggest matchups will come in the playoffs, but let's take a look at the regular season, where we know exactly who the opponents are and where they will play.

Super Bowl LX Rematch in Week 1

What better way to test the 2026-27 Patriots than with a Super Bowl rematch with arguably the best team in football?

In the Super Bowl, Drake Maye barely had time to take a snap before he had pressure on him. After some serious rejuvenation along the offensive line this offseason, it should be a different ball game in September.

This is going to be one of the most challenging games of the year, and the fact that it's the season opener is very exciting. It will also have one of the best receiver and corner matchups of the season in Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Christian Gonzalez. Gonzo got the best of JSN in the Super Bowl, and I expect him to lock him up Week 1 yet again. Few things are certain in life, but Gonzalez locking up number one weapons is one of them. If the Patriots' offense can step up and go toe-to-toe with one of the best defenses in the league and come out with a win, it will set them up for a very promising season.

The Bills rivalry is renewed

After multiple seasons of getting stomped by the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots are back to being the kings of the AFC East. In order to hold onto that title, they will need to at least split their two-game series with Buffalo. The Bills are the biggest threat to New England in the division due to the lack of talent in Miami and New York, and we could see some incredibly entertaining battles between Maye and Josh Allen. Two very similar styles at quarterback, gunslingers with a massive frame and elite scrambling ability that could turn each game into a shootout deep into the fourth quarter.

Also, never underestimate a good AFC East rivalry. Whenever the Patriots play a rival, they tend to bring their best game, especially with Mike Vrabel leading the way. Vrabel is one of the best motivators in the game, so you know he is going to have his crew firing on all cylinders when the lineup against the Bills.

The Bears game is showcasing the future of the NFL

The Chicago Bears game is one of the most exciting matchups on the schedule for a multitude of reasons.

First of all, the future of the quarterback position in the NFL will be on full display with Maye and Caleb Williams. Second of all, two of the biggest head coach hires from last season, Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson, will be battling it out. And third of all, it is a matchup of two young teams loaded with talent that could rule the NFL for the next ten years.

Maye and Williams came out of the same draft class, and both have solidified their place as the future faces of the NFL, so this matchup will be one for the record books. It will be a lot of fun to see coach Vrabel, who is more of the motivator and preparation type of coach, going against the offensive mastermind coach, Ben Johnson.

We will get to see these two young, high-powered teams go head-to-head on a Thursday Night Prime Time and watch what could be a Super Bowl Preview. This will be a game that will have fans glued to their TVs (myself included) and will be sure to have some fireworks.

Tom Brady will be watching over the house he built against the Packers

New England will be facing off with the Green Bay Packers in November, and Tom Brady will be announcing at Gillette Stadium.

You can bet that the house Brady built will be absolutely rocking when he is shown on the big screen. The Packers are always a challenging opponent and have some serious star power. The priority will be slowing down Micah Parsons and giving the offense time to operate, as well as slowing down a Matt LeFleur offense.

The Packers are consistently a playoff team, so this will be yet another test for New England. I am going to predict a win from the Patriots here, not just because they are more talented and better coached, but because of the X-factor of Brady being in attendance. The crowd is going to be more than riled up, Vrabel will have his guys ready for war, and the entire region of New England will be ready to rock.

The return of Patrick Mahomes

Monday Night Football, week 15, Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the biggest matchups of the year.

Mahomes will likely be very much back from his injury and be heating up towards the end of the season as he always does. Primetime in December is the bread and butter of Mahomes and the Chiefs, but there is a new heavyweight in town: Vrabel and Maye.

The Chiefs finally got some relief from the Patriots after Tom Brady left, and just like that, New England has returned. If the Patriots end up landing A.J. Brown, this is the type of game you get a coverage-dictating receiver for. It is going to be a very hostile environment for New England in Arrowhead. It is a Prime Time game, it will likely be freezing in December, and the crowd is known to be exponentially louder than other atmospheres around the league.

However, that is exactly where you want somebody like Brown. He can score on any play and would be Maye's go-to target when he needs a big conversion. My prediction is that Brown will be one of the top reasons the Patriots walk away with a win and will have a legacy game that is remembered in Patriots history.

AFC Championship Rematch

Arguably, one of the biggest games of the entire season is the AFC Championship rematch with the Denver Broncos in week 17.

Many people said the Patriots got lucky when Bo Nix couldn't play in the AFC Championship, and that the Broncos easily would've advanced to the Super Bowl at full health. This game will hopefully be a great rematch with both teams at full strength. It will also be a great appetizer to the playoffs, seeing as both the Broncos and Patriots will likely be playoff teams, and could meet just a matter of weeks later.

There will be some great matchups to watch in this game. Potentially Brown and Pat Surtain, Maye and Nix, and Gonzalez and Jaylen Waddle, to name a few. Overall, this is going to be a game that has a massive impact on playoff seeding and will also have some serious juice due to last year's outcome.
