Romeo Doubs' debut with the New England Patriots was very ugly. He didn't record a single reception on three targets, dropped a wide-open pass in the fourth quarter that played a big role in New England's loss (if he doesn't drop that pass, then Drake Maye probably doesn't throw his second interception the very next play), and he was completely locked up after A.J. Brown left the game due to a high-ankle sprain.
Admittedly, things might get worse for Doubs before they get better. He's going to need more time to gel with Maye (especially since neither of them played a single snap in preseason), and he's going to have a lot more on his plate now that Brown is expected to be placed on the injured reserve and miss the Patriots' next four games.
But at the same time, there's nowhere to go but up for the Los Angeles native. He's not nearly as bad as he looked in Week 1, and he's still talented enough to become a real asset to the Patriots, even if it might take some time for him to prove it.
Romeo Doubs is still a good fit in New England on paper
He's not 2007 Randy Moss, but Doubs is an incredbly talented receiver who should help the Patriots' offensive identity.
Doubs is a very physical receiver who knows how to get into the end zone (21 receiving touchdowns in his first four NFL seasons -- led the Green Bay Packers twice despite never being a true No. 1 receiver) and is a legitimate threat in the red zone. He's also incredibly versatile in the sense that he can line up anywhere on the field and is an efficient route runner.
There are also reasons to think he could be in for a career year (which I do realize sounds pretty ironic after his Week 1 disaster) because he's never played alongside another receiver like Brown, who can take the top off the defense and will open up the rest of the field because of his gravity (sure, he's going to miss the next month or so of play, but it's not like he's going to miss the entire season -- he's not even going to miss half of it).
The Patriots and the fanbase need to be patient with Doubs. Nobody is expecting him to score 30 touchdowns this season, but there were high hopes for him in New England for a reason. He is very talented and should be a great weapon for Maye. I agree that Week 1 was rough, but it was just one game, and he will have plenty more opportunities to showcase his talents and prove that the Patriots were right to bring him in this offseason.
