The New England Patriots have made it clear that protecting Drake Maye is their number one concern. They addressed that concern heavily this offseason, and we could be in for an even more electric Maye since he will have protection and time in the pocket.
They made multiple significant additions along the offensive line and showed us they still have faith in Will Campbell as the franchise left tackle. With that being said, let's take a look at the new and improved wall of protection for Maye.
The addition of a potential Pro Bowl guard
The Patriots added Alijah Vera-Tucker in free agency, and even though he has had some serious struggles with injury in his career, the tools he has are undeniable. His size and athleticism give him the potential to be a Pro Bowl guard if he can stay healthy, and putting him next to Campbell is the ideal move for New England.
Campbell is still a very young player and could use a seasoned veteran with more size next to him. My prediction for 2026 is that Vera-Tucker will stay healthy and be one of the top performers in Foxborough, taking quite a bit of pressure off of Maye. This addition could be yet another mastermind move by Mike Vrabel.
Using a premium draft asset on the future of Drake Maye
The Patriots used their 2026 first-round pick on another offensive tackle. Are they trying to develop the successor to right tackle Morgan Moses? Or are they clearly using every possible chance to protect Drake Maye? I believe both are true.
Moses is 35 years old, and they clearly need a successor to be the future franchise right tackle. Maye was also constantly under pressure during the 2025 Super Bowl run, and the top priority needed to be giving him more protection. By trading up to pick 28 in the NFL Draft, the Patriots showed how much they valued getting one of the top tackles in the draft, and this pick gives them a huge amount of potential for this offensive line.
With Campbell getting healthy and getting back to form as a franchise left tackle, and Caleb Lomu developing into the right tackle of the future, the safety of their young quarterback will be in good hands for the foreseeable future.
A potential sleeper pickup on the offensive line
One of my favorite picks from the Patriots' 2026 Draft class was offensive tackle Dametrious Crownover. The Texas A&M lineman is absolutely massive. At six-foot-seven with 35-inch arms, he has the frame and length to play tackle at the NFL level. He has some great tools at his disposal, but is very raw in some of his techniques. This is why he fell in the draft; however, the Patriots are betting on his potential here.
They already have their tackle positions secure for 2026, which will give them time to develop Crownover. With Moses likely departing after this season, and the new tackle tandem of Campbell and Lomu, it will allow Crownover to be the team's swing tackle, filling in wherever he is needed. If he can use the tools he has, and New England's staff can develop him, he could turn into a key contributor on the offensive line for years to come.
Drake Maye will go absolutely nuclear with real protection
Maye proved he is a superstar in this league last year. After he finished second in the MVP race at only 23 years old, it is obvious that he is the future of the league. This is even more impressive considering the amount of pressure he faced with a struggling offensive line. After some serious additions, we could see a version of the UNC alum that nobody thought was possible.
A clear favorite for MVP, and the ability to bring the Patriots back-to-back trips to the Super Bowl. Overall, if this offensive line is as improved as I think it will be, the league had better be on notice any time Maye enters the stadium.
