In the NFL draft, the New England Patriots were able to improve upon areas of need from last season, while also planning for the future at right tackle. With the draft over, we're getting closer to the start of next season.

As we get closer to the beginning of the NFL season, New England will have to trim down the roster size to 53. Looking at who the Patriots selected in this year's draft, one player's time with the Patriots may be coming to an end.

Marcellas Dial Jr roster spot up-in-the-air with Karon Prunty pick

On the final day of the draft, the Patriots selected cornerback Karon Prunty in the fifth round at pick 171. Prunty most recently played for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the ACC, recording 40 total tackles, eight pass breakups, and an interception. Physically, Prunty has great size for a corner at 6'2 and also showcases speed, running a 4.45 40-yard dash at his pro day.

Given his mix of size and speed, Prunty could come in ready to play on special teams, and if his coverage ability is solid enough, maybe earn some defensive snaps. If he does see the field early, it could come at the expense of Marcellas Dial Jr.

Dial Jr. was selected by the Patriots with the 180th pick in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft. During his rookie season, he would appear in all 17 games, primarily playing special teams. He would finish the season with 12 total tackles and one forced fumble.

Heading into year two, the Dial Jr's season was over before it began, suffering a torn ACL during preseason. Coming off a torn ACL and the Patriots adding another corner to the roster, Dial Jr is far from guaranteed to make the roster.

Given the injury and the drafting of Prunty, New England felt the need to improve at cornerback during the draft. This leaves Dial Jr's roster spot in jeopardy.

It will be interesting to watch Dial Jr in the offseason and see how he plays coming off his injury. If he's able to shake off the rust quickly, he could be in line to earn his roster spot. Otherwise, he may be on the Patriots' roster bubble when it comes time to make roster cuts.
