The New England Patriots have a chance to put the league on notice in their opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
They obviously have multiple new players who should be massive contributors, and they also had an entire off-season to scheme and prepare for a Seahawks defense that absolutely tormented them in the Super Bowl.
With that being said, let’s take a look at a few things to keep an eye on and how this game could set the Patriots up for a great 2026 season.
The Patriots' offense is loaded up and ready for war
The Patriots obviously added some serious firepower in A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs. However, fans should be even more excited for the offensive line.
A fully healthy Will Campbell, with Alijah Vera-Tucker anchoring by his side, should prove to keep Drake Maye clean and upright for a good majority of the game. The Seahawks' defense is arguably one of the best in the league, but with the offensive mastermind of Josh McDaniels, the playmaking ability and arm of Maye, the arsenal of Patriots weapons, and the newly improved offensive line, I believe New England will look like one of the best units in the NFL.
My sleeper pick for an offensive breakout candidate on Wednesday night is DeMario “Pop” Douglas. His shiftiness and speed is a huge complement to the strength and size of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, and he has had an outstanding summer.
New England's defense should be elite, too
The Patriots' defense was the strength of the team last season, and there’s no reason to believe they will take a step back.
My main concern at this point is the edge position. Edge was their biggest weakness on defense last season, and while they added rookie Gabe Jacas, who I am very excited about, they are very thin at the spot. If Jacas or Dre’Mont Jones goes down, they are going to be in very bad shape.
Now, the rest of the defense is full of absolute studs, so they should pick up right where they left off. Milton Williams and Christian Barmore, as well as the new safety tandem of Kevin Byard and Craig Woodson, will be where I will have my attention. Those are two groups that should dominate every snap and will be massive parts of a playoff run this winter.
New England also just took care of my biggest concern this off-season, and that was extending Christian Gonzalez. They just made him the highest-paid corner in NFL history, so with Gonzalez satisfied, we should see him playing at his best with no distractions. He earned every penny of that deal, and the Patriots now have one of the best players in the league under contract for another four years.
Mike Vrabel will have his guys fired up and ready to roll
Mike Vrabel always has his squad ready to go to war, but this week will give him even more motivational ammunition.
After the Patriots got absolutely run off the field in the Super Bowl, they had quite a few months to reflect and let the revenge factor grow. Now they get another chance against the Seahawks. Obviously, it’s not like they are playing for the Super Bowl, but regardless, Vrabel will have his squad fired up.
I believe he will make it a point to tell his team that this game could set the tone for the whole season. If they go out and dominate, they will put the rest of the league on notice, and they will be able to build on that confidence week in and week out.
