Patriots Immediately Cut Veteran Defender After Loss to Rams
It was business as usual in Week 11 for the New England Patriots, who added another defeat to their record with a 28-22 loss to the LA Rams at Gillette Stadium. It's the latest example of disappointment in a 2024 season that's been filled with it as the Patriots now sit at the bottom of the AFC East with a 3-8 record.
A lackluster defensive performance played a role in the Pats' latest loss as the Rams scored 28 points while racking up 402 total yards — including 295 through the air. While most of New England's defenders will have a chance to rebound from that loss, one player will have to try to bounce back elsewhere following Monday's news.
Patriots Release CB Marco Wilson
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Patriots have waived veteran cornerback Marco Wilson. The former Florida ballhawk was claimed off waivers by the franchise last December after beginning his NFL career as a 2021 fourth-round pick with the Arizona Cardinals.
Wilson, 25, has been tough to watch throughout the 2024 campaign. He's struggled to stop most passes sent his way, allowing completions on 11-of-15 targets (73.3%) for 133 yards and a touchdown without an interception or broken-up pass.
The 6-foot CB played a season-low nine defensive snaps in Week 11 and failed to make the most of his limited opportunities, playing to an abysmal 28.9 coverage grade on Pro Football Focus after allowing three catches on as many targets for 58 receiving yards.
After failing to carve out a role for himself in Arizona, Patriots fans hoped a move to New England could turn Wilson's career around. Unfortunately, rolls of the dice don't always pan out and the ex-Gator must try achieving his NFL dreams in a new destination.
With Wilson gone, the Patriots' CB room is down to Christian Gonzalez, Isaiah Bolden, Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones, and Marcellas Dial Jr. Rookie names like Miles Battle and DJ James could also be elevated from the practice squad if need be.
Time will tell if New England's secondary will have a stronger performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 12. The Patriots will likely need all hands on deck to pull off the upset as they enter the looming AFC East battle as FanDuel Sportsbook's 7-point road underdogs.
