The New England Patriots went into free agency with a clear need at tight end behind Hunter Henry. Austin Hooper departed to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, leaving a void that Julian Hill stepped into, signing a three-year pact. However, the pass catcher is yet to play a snap for the Patriots and is already facing heat after New England's draft class included third-round tight end Eli Raridon. The Notre Dame product is coming off an impressive season with 32 catches for 482 receiving yards, and now joins a TE room that could be looking for a new No. 1 option as soon as 2027.

Interestingly, the Pats opted to address the position so early in the draft despite already signing Hill. This adds undeniable pressure on Hill, as Raridon has proven to be a reliable target in the passing game. While Hill might not be as enthused, there should be excitement over a new potential weapon for Drake Maye and where the tight end could fit within the New England offense.

For the Patriots, Hill is a limited pass-catching option, totaling only 140 receiving yards with the Miami Dolphins in 2025. The veteran projects more as a blocking option and will help set up the run game. With that said, Raridon is now a clear threat to take snaps away from Hill and push the pass catcher off the field despite the clear difference in roles.

Patriots Put FA Addition Julian Hill on Notice with Third-Round Selection

Raridon has enough speed that it forces safeties to show respect and could help open the middle of the field for the New England offense. There is a lot to love about the pass catcher's potential fit within the offense and what it could mean for Maye. While Raridon's fit is more impressive as a passing weapon, there is a willingness to attack as a blocker and a clear physicality that New England can coach into a complete player.

All of this adds up to Hill having plenty of reason to feel uneasy over his current standing with the team. Even if his roster spot appears safe, there is reason to believe he could slide down the depth chart and quickly become an afterthought for the offense.

Hill quickly went from a clear second option at the position and an exciting addition to a player forced to fight for his role ahead of an exciting rookie. The fanbase is clearly going to be more excited about Raridon and what the rookie could mean to the franchise long term.

No question, Hill has watched his stock slide after the draft and will now be forced to fight for his spot. It is hard to see any way Raridon is kept off the field if the competition is close throughout camp and into the preseason. The promise of the rookie is too great, which works to the detriment of New England's free agency signing.
