The New England Patriots were never going to give Kayshon Boutte the snaps, role, and opportunity he wanted during his contract year, and that's exactly why they shipped him out to the Houston Texans.
In a recent press conference, Boutte responded to Mike Vrabel's comments about him likely being inactive on game days had he stayed in New England. Even though the LSU alum made it clear that there are no hard feelings, he also said he was hoping for a bigger role. And in reality, he was never going to get that if he stayed with the Patriots.
“They did pay two guys to come in and do that job. Sadly, it is the way it is. Being that it’s a contract year for me, I [sought] a bigger role," Boutte said. "I feel like what Vrabes said in his media interview, it wasn’t nothing bad. I wouldn’t say I’ll use that as fuel… It was an honest opinion. He sat there, talked, [spoke] his truth, and [we’ll] pretty much move forward from it."
The Patriots' offseason additions made Kayshon Boutte expendable
Even though Boutte is an incredibly talented receiver and quickly established himself as one of Drake Maye's favorite targets, New England was going to be in a tough spot if he was going to be its No. 1 (or maybe even No. 2) option moving forward.
In the offseason, the Patriots traded for A.J. Brown and signed Romeo Doubs, two receivers who should make an even bigger impact on the offense than Boutte did.
Boutte is a good deep threat, but Brown is one of the best in the league at going long and taking the top off the defense. He is much more established at this point (and already has experience with Vrabel because of their time together with the Tennessee Titans).
And as for Doubs, he's a fantastic route runner with the versatility to be used in short, intermediate, and deep-ball situations. With Boutte no longer in the picture, the Patriots will likely line the 26-year-old up opposite Brown and keep someone like DeMario Douglas as their primary slot receiver (which should pay dividends for the long haul).
Trading the Louisiana native also opens the door for someone like Kyle Williams to take on a bigger role and break out, and if his preseason performance was any indication, he might be ready to show what he's capable of.
Both Brown and Doubs will greatly elevate New England's offense, and having them was always going to limit Boutte's long-term potential.
Kayshon Boutte can thrive with the Texans
The Texans needed another receiver following Jayden Higgins' season-ending ACL injury, and Boutte needed a bigger role and an opportunity to earn a big payday. In some ways, this is a perfect match.
Houston has one of the best receivers in the game in Nico Collins, but there aren't a ton of weapons on the offense besides him, particularly in the passing game. Trading for someone like Boutte gives them some much-needed depth and was mostly a low-risk, high-reward move.
Boutte will obviously be at a disadvantage, not being able to go up against Derek Stingley Jr. anymore, but Houston should be excited about his arrival. The 24-year-old has a lot to prove this season, and he now has a great opportunity to showcase his value with the Texans.
A lot of Patriots fans are upset about the team's decision to trade Boutte (especially since they only got safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick -- which has since been traded to the Arizona Cardinals for running back Corey Kiner -- in return), but there are reasons to think this could be a win for all sides when it comes down to it.
