It seems that camp reps don't matter all that much to the New England Patriots when it comes to kicking reps. Parker Romo appeared to have a strong camp and started the preseason with a slight edge over rookie Andres Borregales, who was drafted in the 6th round this past offseason. It is understandable in some ways that New England wants to give the advantage to a player the front office just spent a draft pick on.
However, it isn't a hot take to point out Romo was in many ways the safer choice. Based on the camp results, there is reason to believe there is a lower possible floor than with the rookie kicker. It is an incredibly mentally taxing position, and every change could spell the end. This has been the case with even some of the most promising kicking prospects.
Still, Borregales has had a handful of strong moments throughout the end of the summer and more than earned a look. One the Pats could quickly regret if the rookie doesn't live up to lofty expectations. Working with a young quarterback and a questionable offensive line, New England is often going to need to lean on its kicker.

Patriots Make Questionable Final Call in Heated Kicking Race
Mark Daniels reported the move with Romo's release happening on the final day of roster cuts. It is perhaps a sign that the decision was being weighed until the roster deadline, with the draft pick spent, obviously weighing in. Regardless, the Pats are now committed and taking a risk that could quickly go sideways.
The flip side of this is understanding that the rookie could offer long-term stability and give the Pats two of the most important positions locked down with Maye scoring touchdowns and Borregales finishing drives. Something to at least keep in mind, even amid the interesting decision.
New England is heading into 2025 with the highest level of optimism and excitement since Tom Brady's long-ago exit. It finally seems that the franchise has been given the needed facelift and could become one of the league's surprise wildcard contenders in what appears to be a fun season ahead.
