Patriots Move on from Key Starter in Latest Trade Proposal
By Cem Yolbulan
The New England Patriots are in the midst of a developmental season. More important than winning is evaluating the roster and developing the young players to be competitive in a couple of years.
One important part of any rebuild is having extra draft capital. The trade deadline provides an excellent opportunity to do so. Any rebuilding team, including the Patriots, will be looking to trade their veterans and players on expiring contracts for draft compensation.
A player who fits the mold of a trade candidate is cornerback Jonathan Jones. CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin identified Jones as a potential target for contenders, specifically the Washington Commanders.
"While Jones is easily the Patriots' most accomplished cornerback, new coach Jerod Mayo acknowledged recently that New England is just beginning a multi-year rebuild. At 31, approaching 2025 free agency, Jones therefore makes for a logical trade chip. "

In this proposed scenario, the Patriots get a sixth-round pick from the Commanders. While that may sound like not enough, it's important to remember that Jones is a 31-year-old corner whose contract expires at the end of the season.
A consummate professional, Jones is still playing at a high level, receiving a 63.3 PFF grade for the season. However, he hasn't been as good as he was in his prime. Through six games, he has allowed 15.6 yards per reception and a 77.8% completion rate when targeted.
Considering how quickly cornerbacks can decline with age, it may make sense to move on from Jones via a trade rather than letting him walk for nothing or watch him decline further.
