Patriots Move on From Veteran Defender in Latest Projected Trade
The New England Patriots are 2-6 on the season. Last week, they snapped their six-game losing streak when they beat the New York Jets 25-22. Although they secured a win that helped the energy and the morale of the team, they are still in the beginning stages of a rebuild.
The trade deadline is on Nov. 5, and the Pats have a chance to move on from veterans and gain some draft compensation.
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox released an article discussing multiple players on the trade block. He listed New England's Jonathan Jones as a trade candidate and named the Washington Commanders as a landing spot.
New England knows they aren't going anywhere this year so gaining any draft capital should be the approach. The Washington Commanders are 6-2 on the year and will be looking to make a playoff push in the second half of the season. They could use help in the secondary and Jones would fill in that void.
Jones hasn't played his best ball this year, giving up a 128.8 passer rating when in coverage with 15.6 yards per reception. The Auburn product is still a veteran who can elevate his play as the year goes on. In 2024, he has 20 solo tackles, three pass deflections, and one forced fumble.
Another reason why the Pats should move on from Jones is that he's in the final year of his deal. The 31-year-old will likely walk in free agency so getting some draft capital in return sounds like the smart choice.
The Patriots are looking to pile up draft picks, and the Commanders need depth at corner. This is like a match made in heaven and something that New England should look into.
