Week 6 saw the New England Patriots improved their winning streak to three in a row, defeating the New York Jets 26-19. With this win, New England improved to 4-2 on the season. The Patriots got a strong performance from wide receiver DeMario Douglas, who followed up on his two-touchdown game in Week 5 with seven receptions, 86 yards (both team highs), and one touchdown.
Douglas was easily the best receiver on the day for the Patriots and was a key part of the offense against the Jets. As good as his day was, he did have one bad fumble that happened because he was unaware of the defender behind him.
On a short turnaround, New England needs the 25-year-old to keep up his streak of good games more than ever in Week 7.
Patriots need Pop Douglas to keep up his play with Romeo Doubs out
Though New England won in Week 6, it wasn't without big losses due to injury. The Patriots lost three offensive linemen during the game, thrusting first-round rookie tackle Caleb Lomu into a bigger role. Those weren't the only injuries the Pats sustained, as Romeo Doubs hurt his shoulder on a 42-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.
As inconsistent as Doubs has been this season, his being placed on the IR is a big loss for the Patriots' receiving room, especially since Mack Hollins is on IR. New England did get some positive injury updates, however, as A. J. Brown returned in Week 6, but he had some noticeable rust in his return from his ankle injury.
Brown still needs to shake off his rust, which gives Douglas a bigger responsibility until either Doubs or Hollins can return. Through the Patriots' six games this season, Douglas is already on pace to finish with a better season than last season, while also leading the Patriots in receptions and targets. After a slow start to the season, the Florida native has been much better these past two weeks when the Patriots have needed him to be.
Patriots will look to overcome injuries in Week 7
The injuries to New England couldn't have come at a worse time, as Week 7 sees them playing on short rest, playing the Chicago Bears on Thursday.
Having the Thursday game gives them a lower chance of returning this week, as the players lose out on a week of recovery and instead only get three days between games.
With Doubs missing time, getting more big performances from Douglas would be much needed for the Patriots to improve the win streak from three to four, and to win the game, they just might need it.
