Patriots need to get Drake Maye some more help before the trade deadline

Drake Maye has looked great despite the Patriots' offensive injuries, but they need to make a trade for a wide receiver to get him some more help.

The New England Patriots pulled off an ugly win against the Miami Dolphins this past weekend. After being decimated by injuries at the receiver position in recent weeks, it was very clear in Miami that the Patriots NEED to make a trade for another weapon.

With A.J. Brown struggling to get back to himself after his high ankle sprain, and Romeo Doubs and Mack Hollins on injured reserve, the Patriots are really just throwing Drake Maye to the wolves. They expect him to carry the team, which he has been doing, but regardless, he needs some help.

Now is the perfect time to make a move for another weapon with the trade deadline rapidly approaching. If New England wants to make a run at the Super Bowl this year, they are going to need to get another playmaker on offense.

A.J. Brown has loojked like a shell of himself with Patriots

Brown was dominant during the summer before his ankle injury, but since coming back, he looks nothing like his old self. Whether that is because he rushed back from the high ankle sprain, or because he’s worried about getting hurt again, we don’t know. However, it is unacceptable to ask Maye to put the entire offense on his back week after week.

Maye was expecting to have one of the top receivers in the league in Brown, and he has been nothing close to that. If the Patriots can add another weapon, it would take some of the pressure off of Brown, allow him to heal, and get him back in time for the back half of the season, while preparing for a serious playoff push.

A fully healthy and confident Brown will wreak havoc on opposing defenses and could complement the newly acquired weapon that New England could end up bringing in. Not to mention, a lot of people around the league aren’t expecting much from Brown this season after the tape he has put out so far. So getting him back at full strength could take the league by storm.

Who could the Patriots bring in?

Two of the biggest names that have been thrown around in trade rumors are Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr. and Indianapolis Colts receiver Josh Downs.

Either one of these players could be a massive addition to this New England offense. My favorite potential Patriot of these two is Thomas -- an athletic freak with unreal speed, untapped potential, and only 24 years old, a perfect young weapon to grow with Maye, and a perfect speedster to complement Brown's physically dominating play style.

There are also always names that the public doesn't hear about until the trade is announced, so there could potentially be some players the Patriots are attempting to acquire that haven’t been the subject of trade rumors.

In a league that is booming with weapons, and weapons on terrible teams in particular, New England has no excuse to not at least explore getting Maye some more help, ESPECIALLY with him on his cheap rookie contract. Now is the time to go all-in and give your young quarterback as much help as possible.

Could New England go get Drake Maye's former favorite weapon?

Many New England fans believe the Patriots never should’ve let Stefon Diggs go. And it is quite obvious that they were right.

Diggs has been balling this year in Washington, while the newly acquired Patriots receivers Brown and Doubs have been disappointing, to say the least. Washington currently sits at 2-4-1, so there’s a chance it could be sellers at the deadline. If that’s the case, New England shouldn’t hesitate to check on the availability of Diggs.

The Maryland native was one of the biggest factors in Maye’s development. Not only was he a reliable receiver who consistently made plays, but every fan could see the confidence Maye developed when he shared the field with Diggs. Diggs was always hyping up Maye, and you could see a different type of juice in the young quarterback when he was with his favorite receiver. Bringing that energy back into the program would be spectacular for everybody involved, and could be one of the keys to unlocking another long run in the playoffs.
