The New England Patriots have looked like a completely different team following a 1-2 start to the season.  Their two brutal losses ignited a four-game winning streak and have put the Patriots in playoff contention, as they currently hold first place in the AFC East with a 5-2 record.

Although quarterback Drake Maye has been instrumental to the team’s turnaround, the defense has been just as important. Through seven games, the Patriots' defense ranks fifth in points allowed (19) and second against the run (77.1), which are significant improvements from last year.

Despite their defensive turnaround, cornerback Carlton Davis III, who was their big offseason addition, has yet to be the shut-down corner they envisioned opposite of Christian Gonzalez, making him one of the most disappointing Patriots through seven games.

Carlton Davis III Isn't Impressing Patriots Fans

When the Patriots signed Davis to a three-year, $60 million contract, he was expected to help boost a horrible secondary. While their secondary lacked depth and playmakers, they were solid against the pass, ranking 10th in pass yards allowed (211.5), and were hoping that the ex-Detroit Lion's arrival would help put the unit over the top.

Instead, the Patriots have been getting tormented by opposing quarterbacks, ranking 24th in passing yards allowed (235.7).

This is in part due to Davis underperforming. He's hardly made an impact, recording 23 total tackles and two pass deflections. His 54.9 Pro Football Focus grade ranks 116th out of 172 cornerbacks, whereas his 50.8 coverage grade ranks 127th.

Although he’s only 28 years old, he’s shown signs of regression in his pass coverage. Quarterbacks have been going after Davis, as he has allowed 19 receptions on 30 targets, 222 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. While it’s still early to count him out, Davis hasn’t nearly looked like the same player he was before joining the Patriots.

Although Davis was never regarded as a true number one cornerback, he’s been a contributing player on great defenses and has played a pivotal role on multiple championship-caliber teams. Despite not putting up big numbers yet, Davis’ voice and leadership have been huge for this young team, leaving hope that an on-field impact will be felt soon.

He's yet to have a shut-down game, but Patriots fans shouldn’t count out Davis just yet. Week 8's clash with the Cleveland Browns, who average 16.1 points (30th) and 178.1 passing yards (30th) per game, is the perfect opportunity for the veteran CB to get back on track.
