The New England Patriots have added lots of defensive talent early in free agency. Currently, 8 of their 13 signings have been on the defensive side. This includes linebackers Harold Landry and Robert Spillane. Although both are listed as linebackers, Landry is more of a pass rusher, while Spillane patrols the middle.
That said, it seems the Patriots are set to lose their starting middle linebacker from 2024, Christian Elliss. Elliss is currently a restricted free agent and has met with the Las Vegas Raiders. If Elliss leaves New England, they will need to find another player to fill his role alongside Spillane.
Fortunately, Jack Gibbins, one of new head coach Mike Vrabel's former linebackers, is currently a free agent. If the Patriots decide to target Gibbens, he would be a welcomed addition to the squad, given his understanding of Vrabel's defense.
Patriots Must Consider Signing Jack Gibbins
The 26-year-old linebacker entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2022. Gibbins was brought on to the Tennessee Titans preseason roster and became a fan favorite, getting the nickname Dr. Gibby. However, Gibbins was part of the Titans 2022 final roster cuts and had to wait until the middle of September to be signed to their practice squad.
Nevertheless, Gibbins ended up appearing in five games as a rookie. In those games, he recorded 28 tackles, one pass deflection, and one interception. This was enough to earn in a starting rle in his second season.
In 2023, Gibbins recorded 95 tackles, three pass deflections and one sacks. Furthermore, he recorded a 77.4 pass-rushing grade, a 72.9 run-defense grade, a 61.3 coverage grade, and a 71.2 overall grade, according to PFF. Unfortunately, Vrabel got fired at the end of the 2023 season, which ultimately ended up phasing Gibbins out of the starting lineup.
In 2024, the 26-year-old played in ten games, making five starts and recording 44 tackles and 0.5 sacks. Though his playing time was reduced, he continued to be effective, posting grades of 65.0 in pass rush, 79.9 in run defense, 75.7 in coverage, and an 83.2 overall grade.
His performance in 2024 proves he deserves to be considered for the starting role again, and there's no better place for that than New England, especially if Elliss leaves.
