Patriots Projected to Target Star WR This Offseason
By Cem Yolbulan
The New England Patriots are 2-7 as we enter the second half of the season. In first-time head coach Jerod Mayo's first year in charge, the Patriots struggled on both ends of the field. In a transition season that prioritized development over results, this was to be expected.
Even though Patriots fans didn't expect too many wins to begin with, they had hoped for a better offensive performance. The passing game has been particularly miserable as New England has one of the worst offensive units in the league.
This means that GM Eliot Wolf will almost certainly address this weakness in the offseason. In fact, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox predicted that the Patriots would be one of the top suitors for a star wide receiver in free agency.
Amari Cooper, who was traded to the Bills from the Cleveland Browns before the trade deadline, is hitting free agency in the 2025 spring. The five-time Pro Bowler, who will turn 31 before next season, could be intriguing for the Patriots on a short-term deal.
On paper, Cooper doesn't fit New England's timeline. He is a bit older, with his best years likely behind him. At the same time, he hasn't had any serious injuries in recent years and is coming off back-to-back 1,000+ yard seasons.
The Patriots shouldn't break the bank for any player in their 30s but they also need to give Drake Maye better weapons. Considering how much of a disaster the WR corps has been this year, making an exception for an older player makes some sense.
