The Patriots are coming off a thrilling win versus the Dolphins, winning their first game in Miami since 2019, 33-27. The victory marked the first time in 46 games that the Patriots scored 30 or more points since October 16th, 2022.
Unlike their first game, the Patriots emphasized running the football, relying on their tailbacks to make plays, taking the pressure off Drake Maye. Since they ran the ball more, the Patriots incorporated more two-tight end sets, resulting in fewer snaps for Demario Douglas.
Although it’s early, Douglas has been quiet to start the season, recording only three receptions on eight targets, six receiving yards, and one touchdown. If his play doesn’t improve in Week 3, the Patriots could consider benching Douglas.
Demario Douglas Must Step It Up
The Patriots were ineffective running the football against the Raiders, finishing with only 60 rushing yards on 18 carries, running 54 pass plays. They were much better at running the football last week, finishing with 122 rushing yards and only 33 pass plays.
Since they decided to dial up more run plays in the second game, the 5-foot-6-inch slot receiver saw a decrease in his snaps, with Douglas playing 45 snaps in the first game to 15 in the second. This resulted in more playing time for Mack Hollins and Austin Hooper, both of whom are solid blockers.
While it’s not groundbreaking news for Douglas not to play in run situations, it’s his inefficiency in passing situations that’s been the real concern. During his first two seasons, Douglas has ranked among the top two in targets and receiving yards for the Patriots.
This year, Douglas currently ranks seventh on the team in receptions (3) and ninth in receiving yards (6). Douglas was great in training camp and received praise for being the team’s top receiver, however, it has yet to translate to the regular season.
Douglas’ snap count will likely vary week-to-week depending on Josh McDaniels' game plan. If this is the case, expect Douglas to have a low snap count again for the next two weeks, as the Steelers currently rank 28th (145) against the run and the Panthers 26th (141).
Douglas must make the most of his snaps and improve upon being the reliable target he’s been the last two seasons. Compared to the two previous years, the Patriots have better options at receiver.
In the offseason, they added Hollins, Stefon Diggs, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III to form a crowded receiver room. If Douglas is unable to be productive in the passing game, expect the team to turn to Chism for a spark.
