The ongoing drama surrounding New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs took a turn over the weekend as a former Patriots quarterback suggested the Diggs era in New England could end before it ever really gets started.

During his daily show on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, former Pats quarterback Scott Zolak said that he knew the front office's current stance on Diggs being part of their roster for the 2025 campaign.

In his own words, Zolak made it known to the masses that cutting ties with Diggs altogether, despite the $16.6 million in guaranteed money he received upon signing his three-year contract with New England this offseason, is something that is at least on the table for the front office.

“I came to this show yesterday with the opinion -- not opinion, but the knowledge that,” Zolak said, via NBCSportsBoston.com. “That it is being thought of.”

"[I]t’s not just the boat,” Zolak continues. “It’s not just the boat. There are some other things that I’ve heard that put some things in question. Are you all-in here?”

Zolak went on to say that, from purely a football perspective, he thinks keeping Diggs on the roster despite the offseason headaches would be beneficial due to the ways he can help open up the offensive attack for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and starting quarterback Drake Maye.

New England gave Diggs such a lucrative contract during the offseason for a reason, they desperately need a true No. 1 receiver to make life easier on Maye. Nothing about that fact has changed. The two-time All-Pro remains the top option on the roster at the position, and that will likely remain the case as long as he is on the roster.

Managing these relationships and getting the absolute most out of every player on the roster is a major part of the reason why Mike Vrabel was hired to be the head coach of the Patriots. With top wide receiver options few and far between at this stage of the offseason, it would behoove Vrabel and New England to do everything possible to keep Diggs in the huddle and out of the social media spotlight.
