The New England Patriots are firmly in the NFL offseason, meaning trade speculation is more than normal at this time of the year. Several Patriots could be traded in the coming months as head coach Mike Vrabel continues shaping his roster, and one candidate who could be moved is quarterback Joe Milton.
After starting the year as the Patriots' QB3, Milton began drawing interest following an impressive performance against the Buffalo Bills in Week 18. Although some New England fans are likely against trading the former 2024 sixth-rounder, it looks like de facto general manager Eliot Wolf might be thinking otherwise.
Patriots Reportedly Open to Trading QB Joe Milton
On Jan. 30, Boston Sports Journal's Greg A. Bedard revealed that Milton-related trade talks could heat up as the offseason progresses.
"There’s increasing belief around the NFL that the Patriots are at least contemplating a trade of Milton this offseason," Bedard wrote. "I’m not saying he’s on the block right now, but the Patriots will likely consider it when everything settles with the front office and coaching staff."

After spending six seasons with Michigan and Tennessee, Milton found his way to New England as the 193rd overall pick in last year's draft. Between his impressive on-field play in the preseason and his off-field personality, it didn't take the 6-foot-5 QB long to become a Patriots fan favorite.
Milton played behind fellow Patriots QBs Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett for the majority of 2024 before finally getting a chance to start in Week 18. The Pahokee, FL native made the most of his opportunity, throwing for 241 yards, one touchdown, and a 111.4 passer rating while also tallying 16 more yards and a rushing TD on 10 carries in a 23-16 win for the Pats.
After a performance like that, it isn't unfathomable that other NFL teams would love to roster Milton. So, what might an offseason trade look like?
"Some league executives believe the Patriots could get up to a third-round pick this year," Bedard said regarding a potential return for Milton, adding that it will likely depend on how other teams view this year's QB class.
The 2025 NFL draft is just over two months away, meaning it likely won't be long before Milton's future with the Patriots is clarified. In the meantime, look for the 24-year-old gunslinger to do what he can to prove that he deserves to be Maye's backup next season.
