Christian Gonzalez is an All-Pro cornerback who was pivotal in helping the New England Patriots surpass all expectations and get to the Super Bowl last season. During maybe the best stretch of his career, from the team’s Week 15 game against the Baltimore Ravens on, Gonzalez proved his worth as a true shutdown cornerback.
This offseason, Gonzalez became eligible for an extension that is projected to reset the cornerback contract market, and now that the first couple of weeks of NFL free agency have come and gone, New England’s next priority needs to be extending Gonzalez.
After all, one can argue that the clock is already ticking faster than ever for New England to get the job done.
Pressure Is Mounting for Patriots to Extend Christian Gonzalez
From the Patriots’ perspective, the longer the team waits to sign Gonzalez, the higher his price will be.
In recent years, the price for non-quarterbacks has continued to increase, and the trend has only continued this offseason with a pair of NFC West contract extensions.
So far, the Los Angeles Rams traded for former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie and immediately signed him to a four-year, $124 million contract extension. In addition, the reigning champion Seattle Seahawks signed Jaxon Smith-Njigba to a four-year, $168.6 million extension.
What these contracts show is that teams around the league are willing to pay record-setting numbers to keep their best players around long term. And in the case of McDuffie, trade for another team’s premier player and pay him accordingly.
Historically, the Patriots have been shy about signing players to lucrative extensions. And for Gonzalez to stay in New England long term, that trend needs to change this offseason and sooner rather than later. If not, another team will be more than happy to poach the superstar away from New England and give him the new contract he deserves.
On Monday, FOX Sports' Henry McKenna reported that Gonzalez and the Patriots held "'preliminary conversations' about a contract extension at the combine." Two days later, Gonzalez appeared on the TD Garden jumbotron (h/t CelticsCLNS) during the Boston Celtics' win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, seemingly gesturing for a payday.
Hopefully, that's a sign that those discussions are progressing.
Gonzo Has Proven Himself
Gonzalez, 23, is the centerpiece of the team’s defense and proved so to end the regular season and on the team’s road to the Super Bowl. During the 2025 season, he ranked in the top 11 for qualified cornerbacks in Pro Football Focus coverage grade (76.9) and ranked fourth among cornerbacks with a 57.0 passer rating when targeted.
Targeted a career-high 106 times, the former Oregon Duck ceded only 46 receptions (43.4%) for 498 yards, one touchdown, and a 57.0 passer rating while breaking up 13 passes. For reference, he had nine defended passes in 2023 and 2024 combined.
In other words, what else is there left to do?
With the 2026 NFL draft in less than a month, followed by organized team activities and then training camp, the longer Gonzalez remains without a new contract, the longer this becomes a distraction for New England. And for a team trying to build off of last season's Super Bowl run, the time is now to reward the starting cornerback and make sure that he remains a Patriot for years to come.
Otherwise, the longer it takes to hammer out a deal, the pricier an extended relationship will be for the Patriots.
