The last wide receiver to reach the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the New England Patriots was Julian Edelman in 2019. Edelman last played for the Patriots in the 2020 season and was just inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame.

For some time now, the Patriots haven’t had a competent offense, partially due to their failure to draft and develop wide receivers. Last season, the Patriots ranked dead last in passing yards (176.2) and 30th in points (17).

Although the Patriots' last two seasons have been disastrous, last season revealed they hit the jackpot with Drake Maye, who displayed his capability of becoming the franchise quarterback. This offseason, the Patriots have been relentless in their attempts to improve the supporting cast around Maye, signing Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins in free agency and drafting Kyle Williams in the third round.

With OTAs starting on May 19th, the Patriots will enter with 13 receivers on the team. Out of all 13, second-year receiver Javon Baker has the most to prove after his mediocre rookie season.

Patriots WR Javon Baker is in Trouble Going Into OTAs

The Patriots drafted Javon Baker in the fourth round of the 2024 draft. Baker had a great career with UCF after transferring from Alabama, posting 108 receptions, 1,935 yards, and 12 touchdowns in his two seasons at UCF. Baker was supposed to become a valuable deep threat for the Patriots because of his explosive playmaking and ability to win 50/50 balls.

In his rookie season, Baker’s primary role was on special teams, and he only played 87 snaps on offense. On those 87 snaps, he was targeted four times, coming down with one reception for 12 yards.

Baker’s rookie year was disappointing, considering how bad the Patriots' offense was. Patriots' receivers ranked 30th in yards per reception (9.8) and 31st in receiving touchdowns (18).

If Baker wasn’t able to get on the field on last year’s team, it raises concerns if he can even make this year's team, considering the changes to the coaching staff and upgrades at wide receiver. Most teams typically keep six receivers on the 53-man roster and some of the locks to make the team are Demario Douglas, Kyle Williams, Stefon Diggs, and Mack Hollins.

Baker must show his development in OTAs and training camp if he wants to have a roster spot with the team.
