The New England Patriots waited most of the evening to make their first-round selection, moving up three spots to pick No. 28 to select Utah's Caleb Lomu. The tackle is a clear reinforcement for an offensive line that allowed 21 sacks in the team's postseason run, establishing an unwanted new league record. Lomu is being added with the expectation he'll be a swing tackle, a position of need, perhaps, offering the franchise a long-term answer behind right tackle Morgan Moses, who is 35 and entering the final two years of his deal.

However, the more interesting takeaway from the pick is what appears to be a lack of confidence in left tackle Will Campbell. Last year's first-round selection allowed 29 pressures during the playoffs and appeared to be a clear liability. While fans will be quick to point to Campbell coming back from an injury, excuses shouldn't be accepted in what was a performance that helped prevent the team from winning it all.

Lomu serves as both depth and a clear swing tackle, as well as a warning to Campbell. If there are any lingering issues from last year's run, the franchise now has an answer to pivot to. Moses has two years remaining on his deal, making it easy for the Patriots to go in any direction needed with the team's most recent offensive line addition.

Patriots Clearly Send Will Campbell a Warning with Caleb Lomu Selection

New England opting to bring in Lomu gives the franchise an emergency option if Campbell's postseason problems weren't an outlier, but rather a sign of things to come. This shouldn't be the expectation based on the 2025 regular season, though, as the left tackle allowed just five sacks in 476 snaps of pass protection.

While this is far from elite, Campbell showed steady improvement and the ability to hold up in big moments. Those two traits that completely disappeared during the playoffs, leaving the demand that the Patriots have an emergency plan in place. Lomu serves as this, while also sending a clear message to Campbell that his margin for error is now gone.

If the Patriots need to make a change, either due to Campbell's struggles or Moses's age, the needed piece is now on the roster. The left tackle has to take note and realize the level of scrutiny he will now be under after being a clear reason the team fell short of winning it all.

With that said, if everything goes perfectly, Lomu is a swing tackle who will line up alongside Campbell, rather than replace him. However, there is no denying the message it sends to the 2025 first-round pick and the possibilities that are now open. New England unquestionably made a wise decision and hopefully motivated a player coming off a frustrating playoff run.
