The New England Patriots have already made some difficult decisions to their roster before Tuesday’s deadline. One of their notable releases was UDFA quarterback Ben Wooldridge, who they waived on Friday following the team’s loss to the Giants.

After releasing Wooldridge, the Patriots now have two quarterbacks on the roster, Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs. With Wooldridge’s release, the Patriots are now in the market for a third-string quarterback, likely indicating that they want another veteran around Maye.

Since their defense got shredded by Tommy DeVito on Thursday, the Patriots should consider signing DeVito as their third-string quarterback if he is waived.

Patriots Should Poach Tommy DeVito if He's Waived

Tommy DeVito proved that he deserved a roster spot this preseason, throwing for 323 yards, four touchdowns, and completing 78.9% of his passes. However, it won’t be with the Giants, as they already have Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, and Jameis Winston in a crowded quarterback room.

Although he has a chance of beating out Winston, the Giants signed the veteran to a two-year, $8 million deal this offseason, which likely means they don’t plan on parting from him. If the Giants part ways with DeVito, he’ll be a hot name, as teams are already making moves to add to their depth at quarterback.

The Patriots should do whatever it takes to get their hands on DeVito, even if it means trading for him. DeVito has displayed that he can fill in for a starting quarterback and provide stability at the position.

When Daniel Jones went down in 2023, DeVito stepped up, throwing for eight touchdowns, three interceptions, and 1,101 yards in nine games, posting a 3-3 record in six starts. Although last year was a down year for him, throwing for 257 yards and posting a 0-2 record, he didn’t record a turnover.

The Patriots need insurance and quality play at backup quarterback, as Maye already left a game last year due to injury. DeVito would be the perfect fit for the Patriots, bolstering their depth alongside Dobbs with two capable quarterbacks who can come in and play if necessary.
