The New England Patriots' running back room has been a prime source of discussion among fans to begin the 2025 NFL season. Rhamondre Stevenson's fumbling issues are showing no signs of letting up, TreVeyon Henderson isn't getting as many touches as fans would like, and Antonio Gibson was just lost to a season-ending ACL tear over the weekend.

Although a change-up was certainly needed after the backfield's underwhelming success through five games, Gibson's injury has forced to Patriots to add some RB depth sooner than expected. According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, New England has signed former Texas A&M/Florida State RB Jashaun Corbin to their practice squad.

Considering how 24-year-old RB Terrell Jennings was the only other runner on the practice squad, Corbin's signing makes a ton of sense. Stevenson and Henderson will likely share the top backfield duties for the rest of the season while alternating the RB3 role between Corbin and Jennings, depending on who's most recently impressed the coaches in practice.

Corbin has struggled to find a permanent NFL home since going undrafted in 2022. The Rockledge, FL native has spent time with the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers, and was with the Atlanta Falcons from June until he was a part of their final roster cuts on Aug. 26.

While Corbin's NFL resume isn't dazzling many people, his 2025 United Football League performance was good enough to get him on the Patriots' radar. The 5-foot-11, 215-pound RB paced the UFL with 514 rushing yards as a member of the San Antonio Brahmas earlier this year, and even added 138 receiving yards on 18 catches while scoring four total touchdowns.

The loss of Gibson also affects the Patriots' special teams, as the ex-Memphis Tiger had already amassed 342 return yards and a touchdown on 12 kickoffs so far. Fortunately, Corbin has some experience in that area, having averaged 25.0 return yards on 24 attempts in college and even tallied 252 yards on 11 attempts with the Brahmas in 2025.

It'll be interesting to see if the Patriots give Corbin any opportunities, either out of the backfield or on special teams. Gibson's injury has created a void in both areas, and immediately contributing could see New England's newest signing go from being a random practice squad name to someone with a carved out role as the RB3.
