The New England Patriots spent the first week of free agency adding to the defensive side of the ball. As it stands, 9 of the Patriots' 15 signings have been defenders. Offensively, New England has added three linemen and two skill position players. Fans aren't too pleased with the lack of offensive additions around second-year quarterback Drake Maye to this point in the offseason.

That said, New England still seems to be searching the market to add more free-agent talent on offense. According to Albert Breer, free agent receiver Stefon Diggs had dinner with staffers in Foxboro on Wednesday and is set to have a team physical on Thursday. If the Patriots are able to land Diggs, it would be a significant upgrade to their wide receiver room.

Patriots Trending Towards Signing Stefon Diggs

Diggs has been one of the NFL's top receivers since entering the league in 2015 with the Minnesota Vikings. Even so, the Patriots weren't fully acquainted with the 32-year-old until he joined the division-rival Buffalo Bills in 2020.

While in Buffalo, Diggs recorded 53 receptions on 82 targets for 713 yards and seven touchdowns in nine games against the Patriots. It goes without saying that Diggs, as the Bills' No.1 threat against New England, was a problem.

Nonetheless, the 32-year-old is coming off an ACL tear in 2024. Prior to tearing his ACL, Diggs was putting together a decent season as the Houston Texans' third wide receiver. In eight games, Diggs recorded 47 receptions on 64 targets for 496 yards and three touchdowns.

That production had him on pace to reach 1,000 yards in 2024 if he hadn't sustained the injury. With the Texans' trio of receivers in 2024, Diggs's hot start was certainly surprising.

Nevertheless, the Patriots interest in Diggs is needed, even if it's only for one season. Monitoring this potential signing will be at the top of fans' minds in the coming days.
