Patriots Tease Bigger Role for Playmaker After Week 6 Performance
The New England Patriots are 1-5 on the season, dropping five games in a row. Despite being on this losing streak, the loss in Week 6 didn't feel like the rest of them.
That's because rookie quarterback Drake Maye got the start and showed serious flashes. The Patriots scored a season-high 21 points and the North Carolina product had a solid game in his first start. Maye went 20-of-33 for 243 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and a team-high 38 rushing yards.
Eight different players caught a pass and one of these guys might see an expanded role after his performance on Sunday.
Patriots News: DeMario Douglas Could See His Role Increase
When speaking to team reporters after the game on Sunday, Mayo said the team is thinking about using receiver DeMario Douglas more in 2-WR sets.
Douglas is coming off his best performance in his career and Mayo highlighted his ability to get open as a reason why his role could expand.
The Liberty product was Maye's go-to option in the passing game, where he logged six catches for a career-high 92 yards and one score.
New England's offense finally found some rhythm last game, so they need to dig into the well of what worked. That's where Douglas comes in. The 23-year-old is a shifty pass catcher who can make defenders miss in open space. Last season as a rookie, Douglas had 49 receptions for 561 yards.
In his first game with Maye, he also scored his first NFL touchdown. Even though they're on a losing streak, the Pats may have found a spark to their offense and it was badly needed.
