The New England Patriots enter free agency looking to add talent across their roster. However, one of their top priorities needs to be adding talent on the outside to help Drake Maye. Unfortunately, big names such as D.K. Metcalf, Chris Godwin, and Davante Adams are already off the market.
Godwin, for instance, chose to stay in Tampa Bay for less money, according to Ian Rapoport. While there's no confirmation that New England was in on Godwin, it would have been a mistake if there was no attempt to sign him. That said, the Patriots must now shift their attention to a different wide receiver.
That player should be former New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton. At only 28, Slayton is still fairly young and has had good production in bad Giants offenses. Therefore, he should be able to provide Maye with some much-needed help.
Patriots Should Move Their Focus to Signing Darius Slayton
Slayton has spent the first six years of his career with the Giants as the No.1 or No.2 option. The former fifth-round pick has only two seasons with under 700 receiving yards. While that's not shocking, given where he was in the pecking order, the fact that he never surpassed 1,000 receiving yards is a bit disappointing.
Even so, consistently putting together 700-yard seasons is quite the accomplishment for a fifth-round pick. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old has proven to have a bit of a drop problem in his NFL career.
Throughout six years, Slayton has dropped 28 passes, which has contributed to him only catching 56% (259/459)of passes thrown his way. This drop issue could severely hamper Maye's development in his second season.
Be that as it may, New England is desperate for wide receiver help, and Slayton, even with his drops, would provide that. Even though he may not be people's top option, fans shouldn't be surprised if New England ends up signing him.
