Patriots Trade Defensive Leader to NFC Contender in Projected Deadline Move
The New England Patriots are 2-6 after they picked up a thrilling 25-22 win over the New York Jets in Week 8. The Patriots are in the beginning stages of a rebuild so they know there is work to be done.
Even though they snapped their six-game losing streak, the Pats aren't headed anywhere this year. The trade deadline is on Nov. 5, and New England should be sellers at the deadline.
Teams around the league are making calls and an NFL insider revealed that defensive tackle Davon Godchaux could be someone on the move.
Patriots Rumors: Davon Godchaux is a Name To Watch at the Trade Deadline
Per ESPN's Dan Graziano, Godchaux is someone who could be sent over to the San Francisco 49ers.
"If the Niners are looking to add up front on defense, the more likely trade candidate might be New England's Davon Godchaux, since the Patriots seem to be moving guys who they've recently extended. Godchaux has a $4 million guaranteed salary next year. But the Niners are all-in, and I expect them to look for help on defense, where they haven't looked like themselves all season."
- Dan Graziano
This offseason, the Pats gave Godchaux a two-year extension that was worth up to $21 million. His deal included $16.5 million guaranteed. He's slated to have $4 million guaranteed on the books in 2025 as Graziano stated.
The 49ers are looking for more force along the interior after Javon Hargrave went down for the year with a torn right triceps.
Godchaux could look to fill in that void for the 49ers. He has 29 total tackles this year but hasn't been able to get into the backfield consistently. He has zero tackles for loss and has a 48.6 run-defense grade per PFF.
This would be a great opportunity to get some draft capital for a player who won't be with the team for the long haul.
In this projected trade, the Pats move on from Godchaux in exchange for a fourth-round pick. The 49ers are looking to make another push for a Super Bowl. They may be willing to dish out a draft pick to bolster the defensive front.
If they do offer a deal similar to this, the Pats should accept that immediately. Pile up as much draft capital as possible.
