Patriots Veteran Makes Shocking Comments on Future in NE
By Jovan Alford
The 2024 season for the New England Patriots has some growing pains under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. The three-win Patriots started the season with veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett under center, but New England eventually pivoted to rookie Drake Maye in Week 6.
The veteran quarterback, who was signed to a one-year, $8 million deal, didn’t play badly in his limited starts (58.5%, 696 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT), but the goal was for Maye to take over. With the Pats having their franchise quarterback and Brissett being a pending free agent, the veteran is potentially preparing for life not in New England.
"I'm interested to see what my future holds. Hopefully, I get somewhere to land," Brissett said this week (h/t ESPN’s Mike Reiss).
New England offered Brissett a two-year deal when they courted him in the offseason, per Reiss. However, the 32-year-old QB preferred to take a one-year contract.
Following the comment on his future, Brissett was asked if returning to the Pats would be under consideration.
“I don't know. It's kind of early to tell that,” the veteran backup said. Brissett didn’t dismiss the idea of coming back, but he’s also unsure what the market will look like.
With Maye and Joe Milton III being young in their careers, the Patriots would love to keep the veteran in the QB room for next year. However, Brissett likely believes he can still be a potential starter in this league.
But there aren’t that many starting opportunities in the NFL. Teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, and Cleveland Browns will search for new quarterbacks in the offseason.
However, all three teams will likely try to address the QB spot in the draft. If that’s the case, the veteran quarterback could be in a similar situation next year. Therefore, if you are Brissett, you must weigh the pros and cons of staying in New England or playing elsewhere to be a backup.
