The New England Patriots' issues at the receiver position continue to be the biggest point of concern and speculation for the franchise. While New England has a myriad of options at the position, there isn't one pass catcher who doesn't come with major question marks. Even Stefon Diggs has injury and age concerns as the prized offseason addition.
Diggs wasn't the only veteran receiver added, with Mack Hollins signed as well. These two additions created a clear issue for young receivers who were already facing roster concerns. With this in mind, Kendrick Bourne is likely on his way out of New England.
Patriots Veteran WR Kendrick Bourne Likely Headed Out of NE
Bourne was first brought into the league with the San Francisco 49ers, signing as an undrafted free agent. The veteran receiver remained with the franchise from 2017-2020, before hitting free agency and signing with the Patriots. In the years since, the production has steadily declined after an initial great 2021 season.
Considering the new veteran additions of both Hollins and Diggs, there is a lot of reason to believe the veteran's roster spot is now in jeopardy. It makes far more sense to keep the recent signings and part ways with a declining veteran.
If the season started today, the most likely construction for a receiver room would be Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, DeMario Douglas, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Kayshon Boutte. The Patriots aren't carrying more than six receivers, and there isn't a valid argument for Bourne over any of these pieces. Polk is the one possible weak link, but it makes far more sense for Javon Baker to make the roster as a special teams contributor if Polk is left out.
With this in mind, Bourne simply lacks a path to make the final roster, barring an injury. It doesn't make sense to keep another veteran when you could have a player that can compete on special teams, or a younger pass catcher with an unknown upside. Bourne's time with the Patriots will be forever appreciated for the solid 2021 season he offered. However, there is no arguing against the fact that it is time to turn the page.
Bourne doesn't have a path to making the roster and is being kept simply as an experienced veteran who brings injury insurance. One could argue that a better path is cutting Bourne and relying on young depth to utilize the extra reps. Regardless of when, there is little question that Bourne is on his way out of New England.
