Patriots WR Takes Direct Shot at Coaches Over Gameplan
By Jovan Alford
Things have not gone well for the New England Patriots since their Week 1 win against the Cincinnati Bengals to kick off the 2024 season.
The offensive line has struggled in pass protection, Jacoby Brissett was benched for rookie QB Drake Maye, and the team has been thoroughly outplayed during their six-game losing streak.
If things couldn’t have gotten any worse, Pats first-year head coach Jerod Mayo called his team “soft” after their Week 7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Under Mayo, it was supposed to be a different era and feeling but that hasn’t happened yet.
On Wednesday, second-year wide receiver Kayshon Boutte voiced his frustration about the offensive game plan, which will add to the Pats’ ongoing issues this season.
According to Taylor Kyles of CLNS Media, Boutte said he had to ask for both deep shots he was targeted on over the past two weeks. Kyles adds that the young wide receiver noted that should not have happened since he hasn’t dropped a pass this season.
Boutte didn’t get a ton of targets in last week’s loss against the Jaguars (two) but had a catch for 33 yards. With rookie Ja’Lynn Polk struggling recently, the former LSU wide receiver is the Pats’ best deep-threat option.
Boutte showed off his big-play ability in Week 6 against the Houston Texans, scoring a 40-yard touchdown reception. The 22-year-old receiver finished the game as the Pats’ second-leading WR (three receptions for 59 yards).
With New England starting Maye, they should be more open to taking more shots down the field as he has the arm to get it there. Hopefully, Pats offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will discuss dialing up more shot plays for the receivers in the coming weeks.
