Patriots WRs Can't Complain Anymore After Abysmal Week 8 Showing
By Cem Yolbulan
The New England Patriots finally ended their six-game losing streak and came away with a gritty comeback win over the Jets on Sunday. Despite Drake Maye leaving the game with an injury early, veteran Jacoby Brissett was able to lead the team to their second win of the season.
Despite the win, however, the Patriots wide receivers left plenty to be desired. The pass-catchers outside of tight end Hunter Henry struggled to catch the ball, resulting in five dropped passes. Kendrick Bourne and Kayshon Boutte each had two dropped passes, receiving criticism from head coach Jerod Mayo, per MassLive's Mark Daniels.
Patriots WRs Continue to Struggle in Week 8 Win
Bourne finished the game with zero catches on three targets, while Boutte failed to reel in three of his six targets.
"They need to get better. Those guys went out there and they were open at times. The job of a receiver is to get open and catch the ball. If you’re really good, run with it afterwards. They definitely have to get better and they understand that."
- Patriots HC Jerod Mayo
As a result, the Patriots were only able to have 136 yards passing while averaging a miserable 3.9 yards per play.
If Patriots fans were to look at the glass half full, they could easily see this as a good sign. If the team can win games with their receivers only making seven catches, they could be even more competitive when the pass-catchers actually catch passes.
