The New England Patriots head into the last day of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday. Players will soon depart for a few weeks before returning for training camp next month.

Mike Vrabel's squad made a flurry of additions this offseason in order to change the culture and add more talent to the team. While these guys are starting to get used to their new teammates, the Pats have to make a roster move.

On Tuesday, they placed Wes Schweitzer on the reserve/retired list.

Wes Schweitzer Steps Away From the Game

The Patriots added Schweitzer on a one-year deal in free agency this offseason. He was slated to be a key backup for the offense along the interior.

The lineman came into the league as a sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft. The 31-year-old has experience starting at guard and center. In eight seasons, he has appeared in 80 games (62 starts), making stops with the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders, and the New York Jets.

The NFL is a tough grind that wears on everyone's body. Despite signing with the Patriots in March, he wanted to step away.

The Pats still have Vederian Lowe, Marcus Bryant, Layden Robinson, Tyrese Robinson, Mehki Butler, Jared Wilson, Ben Brown, Sidy Sow, Jack Conley, Caedan Wallace, and Demontrey Jacobs along the offensive line fighting to stick on the roster.

Once training camp begins in July, that's when guys up front will be able to set themselves apart. It's hard for offensive linemen to do much in shorts, but when the pads come on in training camp, it will show who will be a member of this team.

Schweitzer was certainly going to make the team if he stuck around, but at this point, he had to do what was best for him and his health. We wish him nothing but the best in this next chapter.
