3 Free Agents the Patriots Should Sign Before NFL Draft
3. Stephon Gilmore
Cornerback is another area of the roster New England should consider fortifying with an accomplished veteran.
Christian Gonzalez looks like a CB1 but is coming off of a torn labrum, while Jonathan Jones was only serviceable as the other clear starter in 2023. There's also Marcus Jones, who missed all but two games due his own torn labrum.
One way to elevate this unit in a hurry would be by reuniting with former star Stephon Gilmore.
Gilly Lock continued to make plays last season with the Dallas Cowboys, racking up 13 passes defended and two interceptions while starting all 17 games at 33 years old.
Surely Gilmore's age has scared off a few suitors this offseason, but it's undeniable he's still a disruptive talent who could help any secondary.
He'd slot in perfectly opposite of Gonzalez or even in his place if the Oregon product is unable to go to begin the year. In fact, Gilmore's arrival would take the pressure off of Gonzalez to come back since the Pats would have the ideal veteran to lead this group in the meantime.
Incoming head coach Jerod Mayo knows how much of a strength this defense is, so investing into this unit -- especially if Kyle Dugger departs -- is a wise move, doubly so when a rookie QB (and all the struggles that could come with them) may be leading the opposite group.
