3 Internal Options For Red Sox To Replace Trevor Story
By Thomas Erbe
2. Romy Gonzalez
Romy Gonzalez has played 86 games at the major-league level. 6 of them were at shortstop, and none have been for the Red Sox yet. All his MLB experience has come in Chicago with the White Sox. In the coming days, he will likely get his first chance to play in Boston as a member of the Red Sox.
In 2023 with the White Sox, Gonzalez played in 44 games and came up to the plate 97 times. He hit three home runs, but his average was .194, and he struck out 36 times. Gonzalez is a career .222 hitter with five home runs and 27 runs batted in.
In January of this year, the Red Sox claimed Gonzalez off waivers from the White Sox before spring camp began. He played in 17 games this spring with the Red Sox, hitting .242 with a double and a home run. He was initially optioned to AAA Worcester but was called up on Tuesday after Story's injury and Bobby Dalbec's being sent down.
He's not the flashy pick by any means, but Gonzalez is another player who comes in with experience and can hold the Red Sox over until they come up with a long-term solution to filling the hole left by Story's shoulder.
