3. Marcelo Mayer

The Red Sox will likely be paying Trevor Story one way or another through the 2027 season. Both sides hoped this would be the year Story stayed healthy and proved his worth of the big deal. Unfortunately, it did not happen as such, and the Red Sox were left scrambling. But this opens the door for their top prospect to start his journey.

The Red Sox selected Marcelo Mayer as the 4th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. Since signing for a record $6.6 million, he's done nothing but rake offensively in the minors. MLB has him projected to make his debut in the majors at some point in 2024. The injury to Story could escalate that timeline.

Ironically, he suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out for much of the 2023 season. When he returned, he did not look like himself. But this past spring and so far this season, he's found the promise he showed earlier in his career, and many think this will be the year he emerges, one way or another.

There are still concerns about Mayer's ability to play shortstop. He has a larger frame and is much slower than the average middle infielder. But Mayer has all the arm strength and instinct it takes to be a successful shortstop in the league. He'll continue to dominate opposing pitching with AA Portland. But when his time comes, keep an eye on Mayer to make a big splash in Boston.
