3 Major Questions Surrounding the Boston Red Sox as Spring Training Begins
1. How much Will the Farm Play a Role?
The one thing that former CBO Chaim Bloom did exceptionally was build the farm system, which went from being ranked dead last in 2019 to second at the time of his firing, per Fangraphs.
The organization's additional focus on the farm has already paid dividends. Triston Casas, Wilyer Abreu, Brayan Bello, and Jarren Duran are all roster mainstays that have graduated in the past few seasons.
This season will largely be defined by what happens on the farm. Due to a thin roster, prospects will have an opportunity to make an impact, and how well they do will dictate the outcome of the season.
Ceddanne Rafaela figures to break camp with the team, but Nick Yorke, Luis Guerrero, Kyle Teel, and others will have a real shot to break through. Factor in an injury here and there, and it's likely that at least one or two guys who don't break camp with the big club will end up playing a role of some kind down the stretch. If they come in ready and capable, the Sox can flourish. If they don't, it could be yet another year of bad baseball in Boston.
