Matthew Judon, EDGE

Matthew Judon is probably the best player on the Patriots' roster right now. So, why even think about trading him?

Well, that is precisely why New England should trade him.

Judon signed a four-year, $56 million deal with the Patriots back in the 2021 offseason. He restructured his deal last offseason and is now entering the final year of his contract. He currently has a $6.5 million base salary for next season but his on-field value is much greater than that amount represents. He understandably expects a new and improved longer-term deal but whether the Patriots should give it to him is another question.

The Patriots have the cap space to give Judon the contract he desires. However, he is going to turn 32 before the 2024 campaign starts. New England is in the very early stages of a rebuild and Judon will likely be too old by the time the Patriots are competitive again.

In his last healthy season in 2022, Judon had his most productive year, finishing with 15.5 sacks and Pro Bowl honors. He missed most of last season with a torn bicep.

Therefore, there should be plenty of suitors for Judon on the trade market. Every team is looking for upgrades in their pass rush rotation and they might not find a better option than Judon.

The star defender hasn't made a public trade request but recently liked a social media post that suggested he went back to the Baltimore Ravens. That could be one of many options Judon would have if the Patriots were to listen to offers for him. They could easily receive multiple early-round picks for him on draft day.
