4 Realistic Red Sox Trade Deadline Targets
By Ryan Bunton
3. Brendan Rodgers, 2B, Colorado Rockies
The Red Sox have struggled to get offensive production of their second basemen this season. Sox second basemen have collectively hit .199, a team low across all positions. David Hamilton has given the lineup an admirable effort this season, greatly exceeding his preseason expectations. However, Boston could still use a right-handed bat at the position.
The Red Sox's struggles against left-handed pitching have been well-documented. Boston is 12-15 and 1-8 since June 10 against starting southpaws. Hamilton is hitting lefties .216/.237/.243 while Rodgers is posting a .301/.338/.501 line against LHP.
MLB.com's Mark Freisand linked Rodgers as a potential trade target for the Red Sox. The 27-year-old is hitting .262/.307/.383 with six home runs and 29 RBI in 290 at-bats for Colorado this season, although he has admittedly struggled mightily over the last two weeks.
Rodgers is also an established defender, having won a Gold Glove Award and Fielding Bible Award in 2022. He is earning an affordable $3.2 million this season and is in arbitration for another season.
Vaughn Grissom has been a bust to date after he was acquired this past offseason for former ace Chris Sale. Grissom has only played in 23 of the Red Sox' 95 games this season as he has been injury-plagued. A trade for Rodgers would raise some questions about where Grissom fits in, especially given Rodgers' team control for the 2025 season.
The Red Sox have an opportunity to address both their lackluster offensive production at second base as well as their struggles against lefties. Rodgers should be on Craig Breslow's shortlist.
